The primary responsibility of leadership is to develop the culture of an organization-a common set of mental models and beliefs that drive the desired behaviors to achieve the desired results. A culture that fosters change as the DNA of the organization to compete and prosper in increasingly more difficult business conditions. It could be the entire company, a plant or even a department. Leadership is the ability to create a vision, observe and understand current reality, recognize the gap, and provide the systemic structures to narrow the gap.

Leadership is not a position. The capacity for leadership exists in most everyone, but most people do not take the time to develop it. During a discussion with a Senior Vice President of a major US automotive manufacturer he lamented that, if they were to survive, they needed fewer managers and more leaders.
