Lean Transformation
What is it?
Lean Transformation is a systematic approach to acquiring and applying a shared way of thinking within
an organization. It does not start with a list of tools to change the way things are done. It starts with a
change in the way everyone in a company thinks about what they do, how they do it and why it matters.
It starts with an open mind and proceeds from there to permeate and change the whole business from the
boardroom to the last link in the supply chain.
A lean transformation must start with an understanding of the rules and principles of lean and
only then can they be complemented with the tools of lean. Companies often fail or struggle with
their implementation because they start with the tools first. They grasp onto the Five S's, kanban or
kaizen and look for opportunities to apply the tools. It's like taking a tool out of a toolbox and
then looking for somewhere to use it. The best approach is to understand the purpose (thinking) of
what you are trying to achieve and then pull out the right tool to satisfy that purpose. Lean is a
people system consisting of tools, subsystems and measurements held together by shared thinking (culture).
